How can you tell whether this book suits your child?
A children's book about autism can give you somewhere to begin a conversation. It will not answer every question your family has. Start with the preview: can your child follow what is happening in the pictures, are they interested in the story, and is there room to say “I don't understand this”? This is our own book. The actual spreads can help you decide whether it suits your family, without a promise about what reading it will achieve.
Check four things before buying
- Language and edition. The Slovak, Czech and English books are separate editions. Choose the language you naturally use together. On Amazon, check whether you are selecting a printed book or the Kindle edition.
- How you will read together. The suggested age on this page is a guide. Look at the amount of text and the illustrations. Your child might listen to the whole story, return to one picture or simply turn the pages. Independent reading is not a requirement.
- The conversation you want to have. Are you looking for words to use with a sibling, a way to talk about feelings, or a starting point for a classroom discussion? One story cannot represent every autistic child's experience. Add what matters to your own child in your own words.
- Your expectations. This is a story and a starting point for conversation. We do not promise treatment, a change in behaviour or an end to difficulties at home or school after one reading.
One spread can be enough to begin
This is an original example created by TAMITOS, not a professional protocol or an account of a real family. Let your child choose a picture and ask, “What did you notice here?” If they say “nothing”, you do not need to follow it with three more questions. You can mention one detail yourself and carry on with the story. If they point to a character who wants to be alone, try, “We don't know exactly why. What could we ask them?”
When reading with siblings, do not give one child the job of explaining or supervising the other. Each child can have their own question, and either can decline the conversation. In a classroom, you can discuss a fictional character's needs without identifying a particular pupil.
Look at the authentic book spreads, then explore our five conversations about autism or open the free printable activity. The spreads on this page introduce the story and artwork. Check the seller's preview for the language edition you intend to buy.
