Character 03

Touchet

Touchet represents sensory seeking and sensory avoidance, tactile processing and the need for bodily regulation. He helps children map what feels good, what feels too much, and how to ask for what they need.

Touchet, TAMITOS characterThis is.

Touchet experiences textures, tags, seams and hugs far more strongly than most. A gentle touch can feel overwhelming, and certain fabrics or surfaces can be genuinely hard to bear.

Personality

Cheerful, playful and a little mischievous, Touchet is a sunny explorer of textures who experiences the world through his hands. He touches, squeezes and splashes everything he can, and finds something fascinating where others see nothing.

Challenges

Certain textures can trigger real discomfort or distress, and although he loves touch, he dislikes being touched unexpectedly. The line between what he seeks and what he avoids is very precise, and he struggles to focus without enough sensory input.

Magic ability

An extraordinary sensory memory, he remembers every texture he has ever touched and can read the whole world through his fingertips, guiding the others to discoveries no one else would notice.

What makes Touchet special

Cheerful, curious and playful, a fearless little explorer of textures

Sensory seeking and avoidance, and tactile processing

What Touchet helps with

Naming sensory needs and building self-advocacy without shame

How Touchet behaves

He explores every texture with his hands and plays with his food, but recoils from unexpected touch, learning to say both ‘I love this’ and ‘I can’t do this.’

The story

Touchet is a sunny little troublemaker who experiences the world primarily through his hands. He touches, squeezes, splashes and pours anything he can reach, and eats with his fingers no matter how many forks you give him, much to Grumplet's endless frustration. He explores every texture in Tamitos World and finds something fascinating where others see nothing. Yet despite his love of touch, he dislikes being touched unexpectedly. The line between what he seeks and what he avoids is very precise, and learning to respect that boundary is one of the most important lessons in his story.

This is... velvet. May I hold it? No! Not that one. Try this one. Feel how rough it is?
Touchet

How he grows

Touchet learns to talk about his sensory needs without shame, saying out loud both “I love this” and “I can't do this.” His defining moment comes when he builds a sensory corner the whole group can use, a place where everyone finds something that helps them feel safe and calm.

Key message

Your sensory world is real. Knowing what you need, and asking for it, is a strength.

For parents and teachers

Because Touchet is a character and not the child themselves, it creates a safe distance for conversation. A child who cannot yet say “this shirt hurts me” may find it much easier to say “Touchet doesn’t like this fabric.” Parents can use the character to talk about which textures feel difficult, what feels comforting, and how to ask for space, turning a daily struggle into a shared language.

Common questions

What causes touch sensitivity in autistic children?

Touch sensitivity, or tactile defensiveness, comes from differences in how the brain processes sensory input. Everyday sensations like clothing tags, light touch or certain textures can feel intense or even painful. It is a recognised sensory difference, not fussiness.

How can I help my child with touch sensitivity?

Respect their limits and offer control over what touches them. Soft, tagless clothing, warning before touch, firm rather than light contact, and letting the child choose comforting textures all help. An occupational therapist can suggest a sensory plan.
